Florida Governor Ron DeSantis wants the Florida Supreme Court to give an opinion about a controversial state law requiring people convicted of felonies to repay financial obligations before they can regain the right to vote. The law, signed by DeSantis in June, requires financial obligations ordered by courts as part of sentencing – including fines, fees and restitution – to be paid in full before voting rights are restored. But voting and civil-rights groups say that amounts to an unconstitutional poll tax intended to prevent black voters from participating in elections.
