PENSACOLA CITY COUNCILMAN DIES

Pensacola City Councilman Gerald Wingate has died. The 73-year-old  Wingate died yesterday morning after a battle with cancer. Mayor Grover Robinson said he was saddened by the loss of Councilman Wingate, who was a devoted public servant, father, husband and community leader. Wingate was elected in 2012, defeating long-time District 5 incumbent John Jerralds. A native of Pensacola and a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Wingate served 25 years as an Army officer, reaching the rank of major, then retired after 40 years in the paper industry. Wingate’s seat on the City Council will be filled by an appointment made by the other members of the council.
