DESTIN SEWAGE SPILL

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection says a spill of an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 gallons of sewage from a lift station off U.S. Highway 98 near the Silver Dunes condominiums in Destin on Saturday may have gone into the stormwater system. The spill was caused by mechanical malfunction and was stopped within an hour. A Destin Water Users crew was able to recover about 3,500 gallons of the spill from two nearby storm drains, and it is estimated that about 2,000 gallons percolated into the soil near the damaged lift station.
