GULF BREEZE FATAL SHOOTING

Gulf Breeze Police say it was a case of mistaken identity that resulted in a fatal shooting yesterday. Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson said 61-year-old Richard Dennis shot and killed his son-in-law – 37-year-old Christopher Bergan – who had flown from Norway to Florida to surprise his father-in-law for his birthday. Earlier that evening, Dennis and a relative got into an argument after the relative came by the home and banged on the front door. When Bergan arrived later, he banged on the back door without announcing himself. Dennis thought Bergan was the relative with whom he had previously argued and opened his door while armed. When Bergan jumped out of the bushes as a surprise, Dennis shot him. Assistant State Attorney Amber Rowland said Dennis will not be charged.
