The Federal Bureau of Prisons has not told Jackson County or the city of Marianna when the federal penitentiary will reopen. The prison within the city limits of Marianna is a medium security facility and work camp and houses an estimated 1,400 inmates. It suffered significant damage from Hurricane Michael last year. The Bureau of Prisons say the correctional facility may not be operational until next August. 300 residents employed by the prison are still working as far away as Ocala and in Mississippi. Marianna officials said the city relied heavily on the revenues generated by water, sewer and natural gas, and other services provided to the penitentiary and the revenue reduction represents about 20 percent of the utility fund budget.
