The Fort Walton Beach City Council has approved a controversial fire assessment fee. An $80 fee that will be collected on most resident’s monthly utility bills. Commercial owners will be assessed seven cents per square foot. The fee will go towards hiring additional firefighters, police officers. Approved 4-3 by councilmembers it will go into effect in January of 2020.
