HOLMAN PRISON CLOSING

The Alabama Department of Corrections has announced plans to close and decommission the main facility at the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore. The 51-year-old Holman facility is one of the Department’s oldest and the structures and utility systems are deteriorating. The main facility at Holman Correctional Facility houses general population and death row inmates. However, the execution chamber will remain in use and executions will not be affected. 422 general population inmates and 195 restrictive housing inmates will be relocated to other facilities. Approximately 150 of Holman Correctional Facility’s low-risk inmates serving life without parole sentences will be moved to the facility’s stand-alone dormitory. The exact timing of the transfer of inmates will not be made public in advance for security reasons.
