The U.S. Surgeon General says people should stop buying face masks to protect themselves from the coronavirus. Dr. Jerome M. Adams, an anesthesiologist and vice admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service, says face masks are not effective in stopping the spread of the virus, but demand has caused a shortage of masks and if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them at risk. So far almost 90,000 people have been diagnosed with the virus around the world with more than 3,000 deaths. In the U.S. there have been 76 cases and one death.
