Medical groups representing ear, nose and throat specialists say a loss of a sense of smell or taste may be a symptom of COVID-19. South Korea, China and Italy have all reported significant numbers of known COVID-19 patients with a loss or a reduced sense of smell. Germany reported that more than two thirds of confirmed cases had a loss of smell. In South Korea, a third of patients had a loss of smell. While a loss of smell or taste is not as common as cough, fever and shortness of breath, it may be an additional identifier.
