FIVE MILE SWAMP FIRE

The Five Mile Swamp Fire in Santa Rosa County that has burned over 2,200 acres is now considered 65% contained. Evacuation orders have been lifted and law enforcement checkpoints on Garcon Point Road were removed Saturday night. The fire started as a prescribed burn on private property on May 4th, but got out of control. 14 residential structure were destroyed and seven others damaged. Fire officials say as of yesterday there were 117 personnel assigned to the fire. Officials with the Blackwater Forestry Center are continuing to withhold burn authorizations because of the dry conditions.
