SEA TURTLE NESTS WASHED OUT

Two of the three sea turtle nests laid on Pensacola Beach were washed out by Tropical Storm Cristobal over the weekend. In the past 10 days, two loggerhead sea turtles and one Kemp’s ridley sea turtle laid their eggs. Mark Nicholas, environmental program manager with Escambia County Marine Resources Division, said two loggerheads’ nests were destroyed, but the nest of the Kemp’s Ridley turtle – which was higher up the beach – appears intact. The Kemp’s Ridley is one of rarest sea turtle species and the only kind to lay its eggs during daylight.
