NAVARRE BEACH FIRE DISTRICT

Another attempt is being be made to convince voters to establish a special fire district for Navarre Beach Fire Rescue. A previous ballot imitative was narrowly defeated in a 2019 special election. Navarre Beach Fire Rescue Chief Danny Fureigh said becoming a special fire district would allow firefighters to get a pension and make the department eligible for state grants. It would also give them the ability to raise fire service fees with a majority vote from the beach leaseholders. Navarre Beach Fire Rescue is currently a private fire company, funded by a municipal service benefit unit. The non-binding referendum will be on the November 3rd general election ballot and needs to pass with 60% plus one in order to eventually appear on a ballot as a binding referendum.
