FSU STATUE REMOVAL DEMANDED

An effort is underway to convince Florida State University’s administration to remove a statue of Francis Eppes from the campus and his name from the building housing the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Eppes – the grandson of President Thomas Jefferson – was a former Tallahassee mayor and a major slave owner during the Civil War. In 2018 the 15-member President’s Advisory Panel on University Namings and Recognitions agreed the statue should be removed and it was placed it in storage. However, it was relocated on the campus in May 2019. There are also demands to take Doak S. Campbell’s name off FSU’s football stadium. The late FSU president reportedly opposed the racial integration of the student body.
