The Treasury Department says all outstanding coronavirus stimulus checks sent to dead people have been cancelled. An audit determined over 1 million payments totaling around 1.4 billion dollars had been sent to dead people by the Internal Revenue as part of the CARES Act. The Government Accountability Office audit said the IRS also didn’t use death records to prevent those payments being made. The agency also asked people who received those checks to return them. However, some legal experts have questioned if the government has the authority to require those funds be returned.
