The number of deaths reported in Okaloosa County in 2020 hit a 20-year high and is 342 deaths more than the annual average. Not surprisingly, COVID-19 was the third leading cause of death in the county and in the nation as a whole, according to the Okaloosa County branch of the Florida Department of Health. Deaths from influenza and pneumonia ranked No. 9 in 2019 and No. 10 in 2020.
