Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office has issued a Consumer Alert to help Floridians avoid common tax scams. As the April 15th filing deadline approaches, identity thieves and scammers will be increasing their efforts to steal taxpayers returns and sensitive identification information. Tips to help taxpayers avoid identity theft and scams when preparing and filing taxes include:
Getting recommendations and researching a tax preparer thoroughly before providing personal information
Using a secure internet connection when filing electronically
Maililg tax returns directly from the post office, not from home
After filing, shredding any unneeded tax receipts or filing documents before disposal
Knowing that the IRS will never contact a tax payer by email, phone, text or social media. If they need information, they will make contact by U.S. Mail.
