The former Chief of the Pensacola Police Department wants to be the Sheriff of Escambia County. Chip Simmons, now chief deputy of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, has filed to run for sheriff in 2020. Simmons retired as the Pensacola police chief in 2015 after 29-years with the department to become Escambia County’s Assistant County Administrator. In 2016, he became chief deputy of operations for the Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff David Morgan, who has said he does not plan to run for a 4th term. He is the first candidate to file for the position of Escambia County Sheriff.
