The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department says a 73-year-old businessman from Fort Myers was killed in the crash of a small plane around 6:30 Friday evening in marshland just east of the Apalachicola River. Sheriff A.J. Smith said Lewis Midlam was piloting his single-engine Cessna aircraft when it crashed and burned just after takeoff from the Apalachicola Regional Airport. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
