On Friday Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Congressman Matt Gaetz will appear together at the Okaloosa County Administration Building on Friday to sign a bill that bans sanctuary cities in Florida. The so-called sanctuary cities bill has been controversial and conservatives have been trying to get a sanctuary cities bill passed for years. Alachua County is listed on the Center for Immigration Studies website as Florida’s only designated sanctuary city. The bill signing is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Okaloosa County Commission chambers and a large turnout is expected. Shalimar police are coordinating with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office to provide security at the event. Federal and state law enforcement officers will be present to protect Gaetz and DeSantis.
