The Florida Senate has voted to remove Scott Israel permanently as Sheriff of Broward County. Senators relied on an obscure 1868 state law that says when deputies neglect and default in the execution of their office the sheriff shall be responsible. Broward Deputy Scott Peterson stayed outside Marjorie Stoneman Douglass while the shooting was going on and Sheriff Israel was held responsible. It is the first time the law has been used to justify removing a sheriff from office.
