MURDERER ACQUITTED BY REASON OF INSANITY 10-12-16

In 2013 17-year-old Brandon Aydelott (“Aid-A-Lot”) was charged with the murder of his mother. Gulf Breeze Police said she had been stabbed and also beaten with a baseball bat. A judge found Aydelott not mentally competent to stand trial and the case was put on hold. Yesterday in a one-day trial before Circuit Judge John Simon, Aydelott was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Psychiatrist Dr. Scott Benson testified Aydelott suffers from schizophrenia, and believed he was doing the right thing when he obeyed auditory hallucinations commanding him to kill his mother. Judge Simon ordered the 20-year-old involuntarily committed to the state hospital where he will undergo a mental evaluation every year to determine if his mental health has improved so that he is no longer considered a threat to the community.
