ESCAMBIA COUNTY INMATE HOUSING PLAN 3-7-17

Escambia County tax-payers are spending 6.2 million dollars a year to house inmates in other counties after the Booking and Detention Facility was destroyed by an explosion and flood three years ago. Almost 300 of those inmates are being kept in Walton County at a cost above 5 million dollars a year. But those inmates could be moving to a facility in Santa Rosa County because Escambia County is considering leasing Berrydale Prison Camp. The facility had been used to house state prisoners but has not been used since January. Escambia Commissioner Grover Robinson said leasing the facility could save up to two million dollars a year. It would take an estimated $600,000 to prepared the camp to receive inmates, but if commissioners decide to move forward with the idea, the Berrydale facility could be ready to go in six months.
