Last night the Pensacola City Council decided to postpone taking a vote on an ordinance that would have banned panhandling in downtown Pensacola. The ban would apply to not only to panhandlers but to street performers as well. Nathan Monk, an advocate for the homeless, said he agrees that there is a problem with panhandling downtown and understands why business owners are frustrated, but asked the council to focus on a long-term solution like housing and resources. Curt Morse, CEO of the Downtown Improvement Board, said 85 percent of the businesses in the district were in support of the ordinance. The Council eventually agreed to postpone the vote until the next regular meeting.
