Florida State Senator Doug Broxson has filed a bill to enable the State  to purchase the Garcon Point Bridge in Santa Rosa County. The bridge has been privately owned by bondholders since it was opened in 1999. However, the traffic has never been high enough to pay off the bond debt and the toll has been increased several times and is now $3.75. A request to raise it again to $5.00 was never approved. Broxson said the Garcon Point Bridge has become an impediment to travel and commerce in Santa Rosa County because of its high toll. He said the time has come for the state to buy the bridge to avoid lawsuits with bondholders and provide drivers with an affordable toll.
