NEW HURRICANE CATEGORY

Meteorologists and hurricane experts are giving some thought to adding a sixth category to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. The scale was developed in 1969 with category 1 starting with winds at 74 miles per hour. The scale stops with Category 5, 157 miles per hour winds and higher. However, with the increase in so-called “Super Storms” some think an additional category is needed. During the historic 2017 season, Hurricanes Irma and Maria both hit numbers way beyond the Category 5 threshold with Irma’s winds at 185 miles per hour for 37 straight hours. However, Jason Beaman, the lead meteorologist at the National Weather Service Office in Mobile, Alabama, says the current scale is fine as it is and he doesn’t expect changes.
