The State of Florida has fined the Gulf Power company for operating an unlined coal ash landfill. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection issued a consent order to Gulf Power in January, fining the company $32,500 for the violation and ordering it to develop a four-year plan to address problems with the landfill and to keep wastewater from leaking into the Escambia River. The landfill is located on an island, across the river from Gulf Power’s Crist Plant north of the University of West Florida.
