The Pensacola News Journal is reporting that City Councilwoman Sherri Myers wants a legal opinion on whether the city of Pensacola can tax cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Myers told the News Journal she hopes revenue from the new tax could fund the city’s contribution to a public skate park in downtown Pensacola. The City has no existing ordinance for taxing cigarettes and Myers wants the city attorney to deliver an opinion by July 27h. Florida statue 210.03, says cities cannot levy taxes on cigarettes, but Myers said she has heard the law may classify e-cigarettes differently, and that’s why she wants a legal opinion on the issue. The Pensacola City Council meets at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow.
